The Graphic Designer’s Home Office

The Graphic Designer’s Home Office

Working from home can be pretty sweet. You can work in your pajamas, and it’s pretty much the shortest commute ever. But being a freelance designer only works if your home office is in top shape. In this episode, the gang talks about our own home office setups, how we like to work, stay organized, and what we simply cannot live without. We go over everything from our desks, to our hardware, software, decor, and ways to stay inspired. After all, your home office needs to be not only functional, but you need to actually enjoy being there for 8 (or more) hours a day.

We also answer a few new listener questions about how to politely distance yourself from a client-butchered design, and whether or not technology is making our jobs as designers easier or harder.

Loved the conversation about clients ruining your work. I designed a logo for a company, and have had lots of positive comments about it. Unfortunately they apply it to some real rubbish, and then still say I designed ‘it’, implying the rubbish too. It is so hard, good to hear others discuss this.

Hi Guys, loved this episode. It has inspired me to write a blog about my new home studio! You can read it and look at all my pics (including before and after photos) over here: Thanks again and keep churning out the wonderful content.

Hey guys! Thanks for giving me an inside look into how you work as a designer! As I am just beginning a new career as a freelance designer I’ve always wondered how other designers work.

Someone had mentioned during this podcast using a simple checklist program and I wanted to mention how beneficial Wunderlist has been for me. It has an app that enables me to take it anywhere to remember what else I need to do. Each checklist item also has subtasks that can be checked off and a notes section too! The checklists can be recurring which is nice as I have monthly tasks / production deadlines for a magazine I design. No need to enter them again. Same with those tedious pre-press / post-press tasks.

Anyway…I obviously love it and think it has helped my productivity tremendously!

Evernote has also been good to take notes during a client meeting.

Thank you for all the practical advice you give. It is really encouraging. Keep it up!

@Chris Blair – I read your comment and could not agree more, I have to live my busy life by a list or something will fall through the cracks. I wrote a blog post a few weeks ago titled “Work Smart – 5 Online Tools To Help You Run Your Business” and I cannot believe I did not mention Wunderlist as one of the five tools. Maybe next time. I have to add that to my list. Thanks for reminding me.

Loved this podcast, I have quite a few friends that are designers and I am always intrigued by how different each one is at there office and at there desk. Some have inspirational quotes but most have nick knacks of items that get the creative juices flowing. As for me, I have a Bobble-head Buddha that watches over my desk as well as pictures of my children to keep me on track and motivated.

One thing I did want to ask because I didn’t hear it on the podcast and that was what each person like to listen to if anything at all. You know, the ambiance. Love to hear what that might be.

Thanks for the great work.

very insightful podcast(i liked the idea of having big ugly printer hidden in the closet instead on the desk). My question is: what paint colors do you use in your offices?

Thank you,
