Our Newest Secret Weapons

Our Newest Secret Weapons

One of the greatest joys of being a designer is when you discover something new that changes your life for the better. While change can be scary, it can also open you up to a whole new world of possibilities.

In this episode, the gang each talks about one such discovery that they use to increase productivity and creativity in their day-to-day. Whether you work primarily in web, or print, you will find something interesting here.

We also answer a new listener question from a non-web-designer, and whether she should learn it, or simply partner with a web pro in order to offer it as a service to clients.

I agree that psds aren’t the best way to design websites but just a heads up that photoshop has art boards too.

I also really look forward to trying sketch. I had to chuckle a little bit as a mainly video designer when you made the comment that the PSD files are huge. I have 10TB of hard drives and need a new 4TB hard drive almost every year.

Hey Guys!

I love that you are promoting Sketch. I’m on Windows at home/work, and I’m doing webdesign in Photoshop and inVision. Though I saw and heard so many great things about Sketch, that’s the one reason I’m thinking on switching to Mac.

But to be fair, most of the things you mentioned is already there in Photoshop.
– Artboards are there, although I feel them sluggish, but I use groups and layer comps instead.
– You can do text styles with the cc libraries panel, although these are saved in the cloud, not in the psd.
– for layoutgrids, you don’t need the guideguide plugin anymore, there’s the powerful “view/new guide layout”.
– inVision is also works with psd files. You can prefix layergroups or layercomps with +*& characters, so screens/hoverstates are automatically generated.
– You can sync sketch and psd files with invision sync app, or googledrive/dropbox, so when you hit save in photoshop, invision is updating the screens in the background.

But sketch files are smaller, so those upload faster. And all these features and more, I think are just smarter/faster in Sketch and that’s the point of using Sketch over Photoshop.

If I would use sketch this plugin collection from invision would be my secret killer weapon over photoshop. You guys have to check this out. https://www.invisionapp.com/craft

Have you guys never heard of adobe fireworks? It seems that all the features you love about sketch are already available in Adobe fireworks, the only problem is Adobe is no longer developing this product and is not updated it since version CS6. Creating hotspots, using symbols for Universal color changes, creating Pages for different states instead of layers, and exporting to PDF are all available in Adobe fireworks. Plus Adobe fireworks plays relatively nice with Photoshop.

Adobe has a program very similar to Sketch. Its called Adobe Experience Design (xD).
It lacks a ton of features from sketch, but Adobe are putting out new updates every month adding new features. Couple advantages of Adobe xD is the speed of the program, and the prototype mode. Each element in the program can have clickable actions which is cool for showing off how a design could work. Here is an example of something I made using the prototype feature (http://adobe.ly/28ZUR4t).

Love the show, keep up the good work.

Hey Wes,
I had the same problem with logging in to Creative Cloud. I chatted with the support on the live chat feature online. This is a known issue and they were able to walk me through a few steps and I no longer have this issue. Basically, they sent me a new install file and had me uninstall the CC Desktop. I recommend contacting them!

One more thing to add about symbols/photoshop is you can create linked smart objects now. Create smart object, drop in multiple files, change smart object, open multiple psds and choose “update smart object”(actually think that step should be dropped.
